The Healthcare-Associated Infections Community Interface (HAIC), launched in 2009, is the newest major activity of the Emerging Infections Program. The HAIC activity addresses population- and laboratory-based surveillance for Clostridium difficile infections, candidemia, and multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli. Other activities include special projects: the multistate Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Use Prevalence Survey and projects that evaluate new approaches for improving surveillance. The HAIC activity has provided information about the epidemiology and adverse health outcomes of health care–associated infections and antimicrobial drug use in the United States and informs efforts to improve patient safety through prevention of these infections. 相似文献
Fungal biofilms may contribute to the occurrence of denture stomatitis. The objective of the study was to investigate the biofilm formation and morphology of Candida albicans in biofilms on the surface of denture base materials. Specimens were prepared from different denture base materials. After determination of surface properties and salivary pellicle formation, mono‐ and multispecies biofilm formation including Candida albicans ATCC 10231 was initiated. Relative amounts of adherent cells were determined after 20, 44, 68 and 188 h; C. albicans morphology was analysed employing selective fluorescence microscopic analysis. Significant differences were identified in the relative amount of cells adherent to the denture base materials. Highest blastospore/hyphae index suggesting an increased percentage of hyphae was observed in mono‐ and multispecies biofilms on the soft denture liner, which did not necessarily respond to the highest relative amount of adherent cells. For both biofilm models, lowest relative amount of adherent cells was identified on the methacrylate‐based denture base material, which did not necessarily relate to a significantly lower blastospore/hyphae index. The results indicate that there are significant differences in both biofilm formation as well as the morphology of C. albicans cells in biofilms on the surface of different denture base materials. 相似文献
Candida glabrata is a pathogenic yeast with several unique biological features. This article provides an up‐to‐date review on current data and reasoning aspects of this clinically problematic organism. Haploidy, absence of pseudohyphae, facultative anaerobe growth of C. glabrata, as well as its intrinsically low susceptibility to azole antifungals require specific consideration in diagnosis and treatment approaches. As C. glabrata today represents a sizeable percentage of pathogens in candidaemia, the use of azole antifungals in upfront therapy of invasive yeast infections is discouraged by recent guidelines. While the selection of C. glabrata mutants with impaired susceptibility to echinocandins has been described, analyses of several clinical studies indicate an association of improved outcomes with the use of echinocandins as the primary treatment for invasive yeast infections with potential or documented involvement of C. glabrata. 相似文献
Purpose: To illustrate the rate of endogenous endophthalmitis associated with fungemia and evaluate the importance of screening in a public city hospital.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed on all inpatient ophthalmology consults for fungemia from 2010 to 2015. Clinical histories, ocular examinations, and microbial cultures were reviewed.
Results: Of 95 patients (mean age 51.6 years, 75% male) with fungemia, 9/95 (9.5%) demonstrated intraocular involvement. Of these nine patients, two were unable to participate in the ophthalmic exam due to intubation, while the remaining seven reported no changes in their vision. Two patients had their antifungal medications adjusted to optimize intraocular penetration and one patient progressed to develop vitreous involvement but died before further escalation of care occurred.
Conclusion: All involved individuals in this study were either non-communicative or without visual complaints. This suggests that routine screening should still be recommended, especially in a public hospital setting. 相似文献
